Day 84 - See the Giant Wisteria in Full Bloom!

Here in Auburn, we can boast of having the tallest Wisteria in the world (yet to be disputed, anyway). With or without the distinction, it is quite beautiful to see. It is located on Linden Ave. which is not a very long street, so it is hard to miss. If you going up the hill, it will be on your left. It is said to be over 100 years old. It climbs more than 100 feet into the neighboring ponderosa pines. The trunk of the Wisteria is almost as big around as the pines! Now is the time to see it, as it is about at the height of bloom season.

Day 78 - Visit Empire Mine in Grass Valley

The Empire Mine was the richest hard-rock mine in the State of California producing 5.8 million ounces of gold in its operating history of 106 years (1850-1956). George Roberts, the original discoverer of the gold soon sold his interest and by 1869 William Bourn Sr. owned controlling interest. The Bourn family maintained control of the mine until 1929 when it was sold to Newmont Mining. It ceased operation in 1956. In 1975 the State purchased the surface property as the Empire Mine State Historic Park. The Park continues to draw thousands of worldwide visitors each year and is noted for its historical tours of the Bourn Cottage, the mineyard and "living history" events.

Day 73- Community Theater...THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, SPRING 2011

THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, SPRING 2011

McLaughlin Theatre Company Presents "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" April 8 - April 16

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Showtimes are as follows: April 15 at 6:30 & 9:00 p.m. & April 16 at 4:00 & 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre, 985 Lincoln Way, Auburn.

Tickets are $15 general and $10 student, and can be purchased at McLaughlin Studios at mtctheatre@att.net or (916) 652-6377, or at the door which opens 30 minutes prior to show time.

Day 72 - FASHION SWAP ROCK

Fashion Swap Parties are the newest phenomenon in eco-friendly fashion buying nationwide, where people raid their closets for threads they no longer want and bring them to a clothing-swap event (instead of the local consignment store). People gather to garner once-loved pieces from both friends and complete strangers. Attendees can swap clothes, accessories, cosmetics, perfume, shoes and lots more. With the economy the way it is, Fashion Swap parties are a great way to refresh your wardrobe and a great way to recycle things you don’t want anymore and have a lot of fun doing it.

JB’s Lounge inside the Red Lion Hotel at Arden Village: 1401 Arden Way, Sacramento, announces Fashion Swap Rock, every Wednesday from 7pm until 9pm. Included for just a $20 charge and a few of your clean, non-damaged “fashionable and fabulous” clothing, accessories or shoes items, is the opportunity for patrons to pick up a number of designer pieces in the provided large “green bags”. As many items that fit in the green bag is what you take home. The value is immeasurable when you consider the fact that the majority of the clothing laid out are from local and national designers that are handing out their “sample” clothing as well as those items that were brought by other patrons. The idea and party layout is not new, fashion swapping is a national phenomenon sweeping most major cities. Included during the event is the “Fashion Swap Rock Fashion Show” that highlights local designer clothing and allows patrons to grab each item shown through a silent auction process at JB’s Lounge.

After their Fashion Swap JB’s is featuring Sacramento’s rock and funk band, four-time Sammy winners, Red Velvet Kiss from 9pm – until. So gather all of your high end clothes, shoes, jewelry accessories, perfume and unused makeup and cosmetics that you no longer desire, pay $20, order from the club’s Fashion Swap $3 drink specials, chat with friends and new acquaintances, and “Swap till You Drop.” All items must be clean and in excellent condition.

Day 71 - Go see " Race To Nowhere"

See the documentary that has played to sold out crowds across the nation and spurred a nationwide, grassroots movement. Important for all who have a stake in U.S. education. A "must see movie" says the NY Times. A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children’s lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared, and stressed-out youth. Race to Nowhere is a call to action for families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.
