Day 56 - See an Art Exhibit in Placerville

Pop Art Gallery and Framing is celebrating its Main Street grand opening in Placerville this weekend.
The gallery’s first art exhibit will feature beloved Calaveras County artist Cate Culver showing “Abstracts.”
“As an abstract artist color fascinates me. I feel it resonating in my body while mixing colors. When people encounter my paintings for the first time it usually is my use of color that attracts and holds them” Cate said.
“My work is frequently described as bold and vivid, yet it always begins with the simplest of line drawings. I enjoy composition and usually am motivated by a sparse design to work from before painting. These designs seem to flow out of me with an intention of their own. I intuitively know when a composition ‘works,’ she said.
“I love the smell of paint and the tactile act of putting paint on the canvas. It is often very sensual. My process is both intuitive and thoughtful. I feel empowered by color and intrigued with design,” Cate said.
Cate’s work has been exhibited in New York City, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Indiana and Scottsdale.
“Abstracts” will show for one month beginning on Saturday, March 19, with a reception at 2 p.m.
Pop Art is located in Placerville at 254 Main St. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find out more at

Day 49 - The King and I @ Sierra Stages, Grass Valley

East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story.

Day 42 - Raise some Chickens!

This is the foothills! Many of us live in a rural area where chickens would be a great addition.  There is something so soothing of listening to the cluck cluck of a bunch of happy hens scratching and pecking around the yard.  The big payoff, though are those wonderful fresh eggs!  Oh, they taste so good and look so good with there dark yellow, healthy yolks. You can just tell they come from happy chickens.
If you have never had chickens, don't be intimidated. They are easy keepers.  They just need a safe place to roost (where the critters can't get them).  You just need to feed and water them and keep their living quarters clean.  The trade off is worth it.
Beware that some areas have more chicken eating enemies than others.  I've had mine eaten by Bob Cats, and talked with some who had them eaten by Bears.  It just depends on where you live.
Give it a try this spring!
